Why Every NZ Home Needs a Survival Kit
December 12, 2024In times of crisis, the strength of a community is measured by how well it comes together to support one another. Whether facing natural disasters, extreme weather events, or unforeseen emergencies, the role of local communities in emergency response is invaluable.
Recognizing this, Auckland Emergency Management has taken a proactive step by empowering 19 local boards across the region with tailored emergency readiness and response plans. These plans ensure that communities are well-prepared to handle emergencies effectively and recover swiftly.
A Collaborative Approach to Emergency Readiness
Over the last few months of 2024, 19 of Auckland’s 21 local boards have formally adopted an Emergency Readiness and Response Plan. Spanning the entire region, from Franklin Local Board in the south to Rodney Local Board in the north, each plan has been carefully developed to meet the specific needs and challenges of the respective communities.
Auckland Emergency Management worked closely with each local board to craft strategies that address key risks in their areas. By considering factors such as geography, population density, and existing infrastructure, these plans provide clear guidance on how local communities can effectively prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters.
Building Resilience from the Ground Up
Councillor Sharon Stewart, chair of Auckland Council’s Civil Defence and Emergency Management Committee, emphasized the importance of these plans in strengthening Auckland’s resilience. “These plans will significantly improve the region’s ability to prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergency events. They ensure that local boards are not only aware of the risks but also equipped with the knowledge and resources to take action when needed,” she said.
In addition to preparedness measures, the plans encourage community engagement by fostering relationships between local authorities, emergency services, and residents. Training exercises, emergency supply initiatives, and clear communication channels are among the key components designed to enhance collective readiness.
What This Means for Aucklanders
For residents, these initiatives translate into greater confidence in their community’s ability to withstand emergencies. Knowing that their local board has a plan in place means that individuals, families, and businesses can better understand their roles and responsibilities in a crisis.
Auckland Emergency Management urges all residents to familiarize themselves with their local emergency plans and take steps to be personally prepared. This includes knowing evacuation routes, assembling emergency food and survival kits, and staying informed through official communication channels.
Looking Ahead
With 19 local boards on board, Auckland is making significant strides in building a resilient city, one community at a time. As emergency preparedness continues to evolve, Auckland Emergency Management remains committed to supporting local initiatives, ensuring that every neighborhood is equipped to face challenges with confidence and cooperation.
